After a long day of work, class, being a mom, or honestly anything that takes up time in your day, you just want to relax. Let’s correct that, you NEED to relax. For some people, relaxing is hard to do and most don’t know where to even start. That’s while we have compiled 4 at home hobbies to destress that you can do at home to relax and unwind. Inhibiting these hobbies regularly will relax your body, mind, and soul!

Coloring

This is a hobby some of us haven’t thought about doing since we were younger. But have you ever wondered why we could sit for hours and color as kids? Because it is fun and relaxing! Coloring actually has the ability to relax the fear center of your brain. It induces the same state as meditation, by reducing any thoughts or stress in your mind. Being able to focus on something you are creating, is a soothing way to relieve restlessness. Find a fun coloring book with pictures that bring you joy and find some bright colors and get to coloring!

A Night Routine

Enabling any routine that makes you happy, can be one of the most relaxing things you can do. When you devote time and energy to yourself, you are taking care of your overall well being. By the end of the day, all you really want is to wind down and relax. Creating a night time routine is a great hobby to establish for yourself. It allows you to put aside all that happened during the day and devote time to caring for body and mind. We recommend a hot shower, healthy skin care routine, and journaling before bed, to help you get a good night’s rest!

Image via Pinterest

Baking

There is nothing more rewarding than taking the time to create something, than getting to eat it! Baking is a great way to relax and destress. It allows you to take a break from whatever is going on in your day or life. The best part about baking is that it doesn’t have to be done alone! This hobby allows you to spend quality time with a loved one, or to share what you create with them. Of course, we can’t forget to mention, you get to enjoy a sweet treat at the end of it all… so put on those mittens and get to baking!

Image via Pinterest

Walking

Another very easy and beneficial way to destress is taking a walk, especially in the crisp morning or evening. Not only is this a great way to connect with nature, but it allows you to move your body and release those endorphins from your body! Make it a goal to walk outside at least 3 times a week and see how you feel after each one. This is another activity that you can do solo or with a partner. You could even put your headphones on, or call a loved one – both of which will make you walk further than you expected. Give it a try!

Hobbies are a form of self care and self love, don’t overestimate them. Take the time to plan one for yourself in the next few days. It’s time for you to do something fun, you absolutely deserve it! Are you looking for a little more intense self care? Check out our recommendations for a full body workout!

Sometimes waking up can be a struggle, especially when that alarm clock goes off earlier than you’d like it to. That’s why creating habits to enable a good morning are so important! Your morning sets the tone for your entire day. When you create habits for a good morning, you are setting your day up for success. We believe it is important to cultivate the life you want and that starts with prioritizing healthy morning habits! Today on the blog, we are sharing our top 5 habits to enable a good morning with you! It starts the second your head hits the pillow for a good night’s rest!

A Good Night’s Rest

Did you know that 7-9 hours is the recommended healthy amount of sleep for adults? A lot of people don’t consider the quantity and quality of their sleep to be a contributing factor of their mornings, but it is! Sleep is an important part of your health and wellness. It gives you energy, a clear mind, and even contributes to your internal well being. You may need to encourage a little self discipline for an earlier bedtime, or cozy up your bed to make this happen, but you will certainly thank yourself once you’ve developed good habits!

Image via Pinterest

Invest in a Quality Alarm Clock

When you think of an alarm clock, you think of a loud ringing in the morning, right? Well what if we told you there is a better option to waking up peacefully! The Hatch alarm clock is a popular smart sound machine alarm clock. Some of the features include calming guided meditations to help you fall asleep, over 25 sounds for a peaceful wake-up call, and more than 20 light options to mimic the morning’s sunrise. Investing in a quality alarm clock that has settings to fit your personalized needs is easily accessible and highly reccomended!

No Phones or Screens

We can all admit that when we wake up, we reach right for our phones. We feel the need to check up on our internet world, or catch up on any messages we may have missed while we were asleep. Checking our phones first thing can cause stress and anxiety. Our mornings set the tone for our day. If we read a message, email, or see a post that sparks an unhappy emotion, we will carry it with us the whole morning and it will disrupt our mood for the day. Instead of reaching for your phone, pick up a book, devotional, or your kindle to wake up your brain in a positive way, first thing!

Image via Pinterest

Morning Movement

Movement is a crucial key to a good morning. After being asleep for the recommended 7-9 hours (wink wink), you’ll definitely want to get a little movement in before you get your day up and running. For some people, this may be a morning walk, an early pilates class, or rolling out your yoga mat for some light stretching. Movement looks different for everyone and any form is valid! You do what feels best for you.

Image via Pinterest

Filling Breakfast

Food is energy! It powers your brain all day long. A good morning is fueled by a filling breakfast. Let yourself recharge by starting your day a healthy, nutrient dense meal. It’s important to replenish the nutrients lost while you were asleep. This will allow you to have a more energetic morning. Whether you look to pinterest for health meal options, or you run to your local coffee shop for an oat latte + breakfast sandwich, a fulfilling breakfast is a must for the big day ahead!

We know a lot of people start their day with a hot drink of some sort, so we want to share some healthy additions to your morning cup of goodness with you!

It’s officially the coldest & driest time of the year. So, let’s be honest, your skin probably hates it. We are definitely familiar with the struggle of getting that glow-y skin year round. Today, however, marks the end of that struggle. We are excited to share with you our best tips and tricks on how to change up your skincare routine for the winter season. If you are currently striving to clear your skin, while also making it look dewy & fresh, keep reading!

01. Remember To Moisturize

Image via Pinterest

We all know that using an effective moisturizer is key to eliminating dry skin. No one wants flakey dehydrated skin, and the winter months makes this even more of a problem. That being said, moisturizing will be your best friend. We don’t just mean in the morning & at night. You should be moisturizing multiple times throughout the day. The consistency will destroy any chances of dry skin. Future you will be grateful!

02. Try Slugging

Image via @Aquaphorus

Before you freak out and say “What the heck is slugging?”. Don’t worry, it doesn’t have anything to do with actual slugs.

Slugging is when you apply Aquaphor to your whole face to finish off your nighttime skincare routine. After you have finished washing your face, putting on your favorite moisturizer, and any other products you may be using, the Aquaphor will set it in. Aquaphor significantly enhances the moisture going into your skin, and as a result, makes for a glowy and dewy look. Aquaphor also prevents dry & flakey skin, so it makes for the perfect winter accessory. If your nervous about applying Aquaphor to your face before going to bed… don’t be! Aquaphor doesn’t contain any ingredients that causes breakouts and is a noncomedogenic product. So, if you’re desperate to find that dewy look (especially in winter), try slugging!

03. Put On Your Sunscreen!

Image via Pinterest

Yes, we know we sound like your mother at the beach….but, she has a point. Sunscreen is just as important for you to wear in the summer time, as it is in the winter time. Even though it may be cloudy, the sun is still strong in the cold months, and the sunscreen will protect you. By putting on daily face sunscreen you will prevent wrinkles, minimize sun damage and keep clear, evenly-toned, and healthier skin.

04. Ditch The Hot Showers

Image via Pinterest

If you’re looking to clear up your skin & keep it healthy, try ditching the hot showers. Hot showers dry out your skin and increase oil production. Which in turn, causes acne. Try to take showers that aren’t steaming hot, especially if you’re wanting lock in that moisture that you skin so desperately needs.

05. Use Hydration Masks

Image via Pinterest

Adding a hydration mask to your night-time skincare routine is the perfect way to moisturize your skin. Additionally, these masks prevent blemishes and destroy any current acne you may have. Using a hydration mask will rejuvenate your skin and create that gorgeous glow we all are wanting.

Don’t let the winter season dry you out! To get that healthy glow, try implementing our tips into your skincare routine… you won’t regret it.

Do you fall into the category of rolling out of bed after your 5th alarm goes off? Only to shuffle to the kitchen and make your coffee until you slowly start to resemble a human? If this sounds like you, then you are not alone. About one year ago we were in the habit of waking up and starting our day in the same way. Once we started seeing a therapist it became apparent that something in our draining morning routine needed to change. So that very next day we tried out the most simple yoga pose we could think of. To our surprise, our mental health completely transformed from that point forward. Since then, we have been doing this simple yoga pose every morning to improve our day.

That being said, we knew we needed to share this life-changing hack with you all. To make this article even sweeter we even reached out to our favorite psychologist to hear exactly why this easy swap works so well!

Image via @createcultivate

Reach your hands up to touch the sky and then back down to your toes – then repeat!

This simple move is effective for just that reason: it’s simple! It’s a quick and easy way to feel control over your day and to ground your mind. You’ll get a great full-body stretch and the simple repetitive motion with a little focused breathing can clear your mind and help you feel ready to tackle the day…and your inbox! Repeat it 5, 10, or as many times as you need for a few minutes in the morning to start your day on a clear-headed note.

So why does it work?

Natalie Underdown, Ph.D., Executive Coach & Organizational Psychologist, The Nu Company explains,

“Whenever we as individuals or teams engage in rituals, repeated actions imbued with symbolism and meaning, we create tradition, safety and normalcy (all so needed and appreciated during the continued long-haul of the pandemic). These rituals create norms that we can look forward to that help us prepare for a busy day ahead, shake off challenges throughout the day, or decompress before we take our rest for the evening. Finding rituals that work for you and are aligned with your values is the trick”

No matter the age, color, or texture — it’s important to love the skin you’re in. Your skin goes through a lot, and it’s your duty to take care of it. There are plenty of beneficial ways to take care of your skin, like eating the right foods, exercising regularly, and nailing down the perfect skincare routine. The products you use in your skincare routine are pivotal to achieving that beautiful, glowing, and healthy skin we all want. That’s why using an all-inclusive and clean brand like ANOVÉ skincare can treat your skin the way it deserves to be treated. Read on to hear more about how ANOVÉ skincare came to be and how to be confident in the skin that you’re in!

MEET ANOVÉ FOUNDER
Evonna Kuehner

After graduating from Stanford University with a degree in STS (focused on Product Design) and a successful career in program management, Evonna Kuehner was determined to bring more diversity and inclusivity to the skin care market. Her academic and professional background, partnered with her years of research, led to the creation of ANOVÉ, a line of indulgent, plant-based products crafted for you to “live your best skin” regardless of your skin tone, type, or concern.

What sparked your interest in the beauty industry?

It was my personal passion for beauty and skincare that initially sparked my interest. My background is in product design and development, but not necessarily skincare. I was fascinated by learning the ins and outs of how to care for your skin, what causes certain skin\conditions, and how plant-based ingredients can completely transform your skin from the inside out.

What makes Anové different from other natural skincare products?

First and foremost, our brand seeks to provide consciously crafted luxury skincare for all skin types and tones. ANOVÉ believes in inclusivity with regard to whom products are created for, as well as who they are created by. We are a clean beauty brand and this is something we take very seriously in every part of our business operations. We pay a great amount of attention to each step of our development and packaging process. Outside of a clean formula, our bottles and jars go through a rigorous three-step cleaning process which ensures the highest quality
products make it to our customers to enjoy safely.

How do you stay inspired?

I am always inspired and motivated by my kids! Also, the customers who have become a part of the ANOVÉ family inspire me. In such a crowded market, there are many other options that customers can choose when shopping for skincare so I am truly grateful for those who choose us over and over again. My customers’ loyalty and support are what inspire me to bring my best every single day and make sure that the products we create and the business we conduct uphold our values of clean, inclusive beauty.

What is one thing you wish you knew when you started your business?

That entrepreneurship is a winding road. There is no definitive timeline on when you will reach certain milestones and sometimes things don’t go as planned, or work out the way you hoped they would. Building a business is all about planting seeds and being prepared for those seeds to bear fruit in their own timing.

What do you hope to inspire others?

I hope to inspire others to go for it, whatever “it” may be for them. Any opportunity or idea that excites you that you can’t stop thinking about is worth pursuing. Even if that means baby steps at first and just researching the viability of your idea or seeing what has already been done. It is very unlikely that you will regret pursuing something that you have a passion for or that brings you joy. On the flip side if you don’t go for it, those “what if” thoughts may haunt you.

What is your favorite product and why?

The Perfecting Oil will always have a special place in my heart. It was the first product I ever created way back in 2012 and it’s been one of our top-selling products since the very beginning. It’s such a sensory experience. Not only does my skin feel amazing when I’m applying it, but the scent is divine. I feel like an absolute goddess when I use it, which is how I want everyone to feel!

How can we best support you?

Customer feedback and referrals are always helpful! If you try our products we’d love to know what you thought and if there’s anything that could have gone better for you (customer service, packaging, shipping speed, etc). Also, if there’s a product or multiple products that you absolutely fell in love with, tell all your friends and family members so they can have an amazing experience also!

We can’t be the only ones that end the work day by simply closing our computers and walking away. If you work from home, like us it can seem like the separation between work and play is non existent. That being said, it can be hard to leave the stress of work “at work” when you really are probably moving from your dining room table to the couch. We get it. Today on the blog we are sharing some of our favorite post-work rituals to integrate into your daily routine. Not only will these rituals help you feel like you are getting the well deserved reset you need, but we are willing to bet everyone in your home with thank you. After all, self care is the best kind of care there is.

Light a candle

Your sense of smell is considered to be one of the most powerful, because it’s so closely linked to the parts of your brain that process emotion and memory. Lighting a candle can almost instantly evoke a new feeling just based on the scent alone! Consider buying a “post-work candle” that you light specifically when you get home from work (or, in many of our cases, when you close your computer and step away from your #WFH desk) and over time, your brain will start to associate that scent with the end of the work day to help keep you in post-work mode – and not running back to check “one last email!”

Dedicate some screen-free time to your evening

When so many of us are spending all day long in front of a laptop, it isn’t exactly the healthiest thing to step away from that screen and head to another (ahem, Netflix, cough cough, Instagram). Aim to dedicate at least 30 minutes to an hour each evening after your work day ends to a screen-free activity. Take a walk around your neighborhood, read a physical book, relax with some yoga or meditation, call a friend or loved one – whatever appeals most to you! The only rule is no screens allowed!

Image via @katrinascott

Move your body as one of your post-work rituals

Once you log off of your computer, try making it a point to get up and move your body. Whether this is going to the gym for a post-work workout, going on a walk, or even just stretching for 30 minutes! After a long day of sitting at your desk, it’ll feel good to move and sweat!

Take advantage of the daylight

If you’ve been inside all day, make it a point to get some vitamin D before the sun goes down! This is harder to do during the winter months, but during the summer time you’ll have about 2-3 hours before the sun is fully set. So, go get some fresh air & sunlight before dinner and your nighttime routine begin!
Close your laptop. It sounds simple, but it’s so helpful to develop physical habits that indicate the end of your work day! Routinely doing something like shutting your laptop off & closing it at the end of your work day can help transition your mental state from “work mode” to “rest mode”.

Image via @bontraveler, found on @the_nu_co

Switch up your location

Sometimes, ending your workday is easier said than done! Especially when you have all the freedom to keep going with your desk 2 feet away from your bed. Switching up your location can help to establish healthy work-life boundaries & gives you a physical reason to stop what you’re doing & step away from work mode. Even something as simple as planning to meet someone for dinner or watching the sunset at the park is one of the greatest post-work rituals!

It feels like we have been waiting for the 2021 summer for way too long. With the world opening up again, and activities starting to return to normal we are feeling extra ready to get our summer glow back. And for that matter, we are wishing our summer glow was better than ever. So, if you are anything like us, and you are ready to get your summer glow going then read on to view some of our favorite products.

.01 – Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40

This is a tinted mineral SPF 40 serum and it’s literally the only face coverage product i’ve been using with my moisturizer & concealer – super lightweight but gives a really pretty glowy coverage. if you like tinted moisturizer for how lightweight it is, this is an upgrade from that!

.02 – Ilia Multi Stick

This multi-stick is good for a swipe of color on your cheeks and/or lips, and this shade is such a fun sunshiny color to wear all summer long for a “fresh from the beach” look.

.03 – True Match Lumi Glotion

Put this on after moisturizer and before makeup for the perfect vacation, just got out of the sun (but didn’t!) dewy look. Finally something that isn’t glittery or shiney, but just makes you glow!

.04 – Dr. Lipp – Superfood Tint 3 Pack

This Dr. Lipp superfood tint in 3 shades made from sweet potato, red radish & elderberry is perfect to add a shiney touch to your eyelids, lips, or cheeks all summer long. Made from organic edible plant pigments.

.05 – Self Tanning Express Tan

This is one of our favorite self-tanners for when we don’t have time to lay out in the sun. We love it because it is a mousse and dries super fast + color starts to show within an hour. You can also choose how long to leave it on, based on how much color you’re trying to get. Some benefits: you can shower, sweat or swim after only one hour of wear without to color streaking. It’s paraben + sulfate free, cruelty free, and made with coconut water to help keep skin hydrated.

.06 – Pixi’s On-the-Glow Moisture Stick

I love this because it is a great multi-purpose product. You can use it to hydrate your face, lips, body, and hair on the go. Different ingredients include: Vitamin D2 which is a powerful antioxidant, Ginseng which revitalizes & balances, and Glycolic Acid that helps moisturize & renew.

.07 – Glossier’s Future Dew

This is a super unique product because it’s an oil/serum hybrid! It is literally summer dew in a bottle. The cherry on top of my daily skincare/makeup routine every day!

.08 – Derma E’s Radiant Glow Oil

This leaves us glistening every time we use it— it’s super nourishing to the skin with jojoba, seabuckthorn, and argan oil! Our favorite part, though, is the flakes of Mica— a natural mineral that leave natural shimmer on the skin. To top it all off, it’s 100% vegan and cruelty free 🙂

Our final summer must-have is Crystal Stone Deodorant. After a long hot day in the sun, this deodorant is a guaranteed life-saver. Crystal Stone Deodorant isn’t your typical deodorant. It’s a type of deodorant made of natural mineral salts called potassium alum, which is different from ingredients used in alternative brands. The mineral salts in Crystal Stone prevent the growth of odor-causing bacteria. This ensures a confident day out in the sun, without the fear of any smells.

The summertime was made for you to relax, and take a break from the work you’ve put in the past year. Don’t let the heat overwhelm you, and take charge of your summer glow with our list of must-haves!

Self-care is a hot topic at the moment, and we are willing to bet you have wondered why any of this even matters. And by this, we mean self care goals. Well, we are here to confirm that self-care goals matter a whole lot more than you may think. That’s why we enlisted the help from some of our wellness experts. Today on the blog, these wellness experts weighed in on why self-care goals matter!

Why is making self-care goals an important task?

“Putting pen to paper and articulating your self-care goals is vital to living a life of intention. If we don’t know where we’re going, as they say, we’ll never get there. Making goals for self-care honors our minds, bodies, and spirits. And when we show ourselves this kind of love, happiness and well-being naturally increase.” – Emily Tuttle, Founder of Pause + Purpose

“Self-care goals keep you growing in life. Growth is important as we all change and interact with different people and situations throughout life. It is important to constantly assess and evaluate how we are feeling and how we can adjust to maintain our optimal level of happiness. Self-care goals keep you feeling fulfilled and happy, whether you realize it or not. Having something to work towards is an important mental distraction.” – Dr. Cassie Majestic, MD, Emergency Medicine Physician and Blogger at DrMajestic.com

“Self-Care is an essential part of healthy living and the benefits of tapping into your unique brand of this are endless. Here’s a short list of reasons why you need to take yourself off of the back burner: Self-Care Goals are like personal markers or reminders of how much you value yourself. Valuing yourself is a necessary and important first step to infusing a sense of purpose and satisfaction into life. How you do this one thing — see, hear, and respect yourself — will dictate how you do absolutely everything else.   Setting and following through with your goals teaches you how to find personal AND interpersonal balance. There is a fine line of course between self-care and selfishness, but you will always know the difference based on the quality of your relationships.

If you feel there is a disharmony in your external world, do not look outside of yourself to try to fix it. If you feel any kind of lack, think about how you can fill that need for yourself with solo activities, hobbies, or introspective practices. Your health and happiness will never be dependent on another person but how you take care of yourself will be reflected in how you feel about everything and everyone around you.  Without our health, we have nothing. When you feel your physical health waning or being drained in any way, stop doing for a moment. Come back to yourself and your self-care goals. Let yourself be for a moment. Are you being consistent with your needs? Are you putting your health and wellbeing first and foremost? Keep asking questions until you land on the answers. Only you can know what you genuinely need to feel most aligned with your best self. “Paula Pavlova, Wellness Entrepreneur, Founder of Pavlova Wellness

What are 2-3 self-care goals you recommend for 2021? Why are they effective?

“The most vital self-care goals are the most obvious. We all indeed need to be getting enough sleep and H2O or all of our other efforts will be for naught. But I would also add that commiting to doing more daily activities mindfully is a worthy goal for 2021. Mindful eating, emotional processing, breathing, walking–there is so much we can improve with a little present-awareness–and the positive implications that can have on ourselves and others is endless.”  – Emily Tuttle, Founder of Pause + Purpose

“Turn inward and ask yourself what you really want out of life. With so many external influences, it is easy to be distracted and want what others have. The sooner you realize what it is that makes YOU feel good and fulfilled, the quicker you can get after it! Finding what fulfills you in life (whether it is career, personal goals, mental health, etc) will keep you happy and less likely to focus on the negative.

Prioritize your health. We are coming out of a year where many had limited access to their healthcare providers. It’s time to pick back up where you left off. During the pandemic many people have increased alcohol consumption and decreased physical activity. There have been dietary changes, limitations to medications, and increased stress. All of these factors can contribute to increased risk for cardiovascular disease and other health problems, over time.” – – Dr. Cassie Majestic, MD, Emergency Medicine Physician and Blogger at DrMajestic.com

“First, when you’re setting your goals, start by thinking about the thoughts, words, and actions that make you feel most vital and alive on a physical, emotional, and mental level. From there, you will know exactly what you need to create a formula for personal harmony. Here are some suggestions:

Commit to language that is grateful, honest, and compassionate. Then, hold yourself accountable BY forgiving yourself when you fail. No one is perfect 100% of the time and the best we can do is continue to commit to our goals no matter how many times we we stumble along the way. Here’s an example: when talking about an obligation that is actually a privilege, reframe the way you might typically describe it; i.e. “I have to pick my kids up from school” turns into “I GET to pick my kids up from school.

Set up a daily morning routine that allows you to just be for at least 30 minutes before you do anything at all. You can use this time to meditate, write (journal), make a list of “feel good” goals for the day (not to-dos), quietly read a book, or sip on a coffee/tea while looking out into nature. Find something that anchors you in the presence of being so that when it comes time for doing, you do so intentionally rather than frantically.

Make sleep a priority! More and more research is proving what our bodies have known since the dawn of time — sleep is our best friend. Sleep is when you produce your most essential and most valuable brain fuel that drives your mental, physical, and emotional health. Hello, happy hormones! So the best goal you can set for yourself is to be an responsible adult, set yourself up with a regular bed time, and then reap all the benefits of your investments!”Paula Pavlova, Wellness Entrepreneur, Founder of Pavlova Wellness

Burnout is a real problem in today’s workforce, and chances are you have experienced it or are currently in the middle of it. Our incredible business coach, Natalie Underdown, Ph.D. is an Executive Coach & Organizational Psychologist, and founder of The NU Co. Natalie has personally walked our team through the steps of burnout and coached us on how to banish it once and for all. Our team found so much value in her teachings and practices that we knew we needed to share the Stages of Burnout with all of you. That being said we will turn over the mic to the professional.

Burnout is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress. It occurs when you feel overwhelmed, emotionally drained, and are unable to meet constant demands. There are actually 5 distinct stages of burnout – once you know what they look like, you can work on identifying which stage you’re in, and how to handle it!

Stage 1: The Honeymoon

What does it feel like? Oh happy days! These are the early days where things feel good, you’re excited about the opportunity ahead, and sure, you can see that there will be some stressful times ahead (of course there will be), but for now you’re relaxed and focused on the opportunity ahead.

What should I do about it? Now is the time to set yourself up for success! This where a mindfulness and wellness practice will pay off in dividends! This is also where you’ll have the time and energy to invest in support mechanisms like coaching so that when stress does appear, you have everything you need in place to handle it. AKA: don’t wait until your car is broken down on the side of the road to get an oil change!

Stage 2: Some Stress

What does it feel like? You may feel an onset of physical and emotional symptoms popping up here and there, be a bit anxious from time to time, get a little short or irritable with your loved ones, and/or feel a bit more tired. You also may start putting the things that actually help you combat burnout (like wellness and investing in your relationships) on the back-burner.

What should I do about it? Understand what’s causing it and do something about it. Now is the time to address this head on before it gets worse. Is it:

(1). Your workload
(2). A perceived lack of control (has a lot been changing?)
(3). A misalignment in the amount of effort and the payoff
(4). A values mismatch
(5). Or the community/environment/people you’re around every day?

Stage 3: Chronic Stress

What does it feel like? This is when stress has become the norm. You start expecting things to go wrong, are always waiting for the other shoe to drop, and find yourself thinking or saying “why do I have to do everything, all the time?”

Health and relationship issues start surfacing (because you have not been prioritizing them) and it starts to feel like everything is going wrong (even if it’s really just 1 or 2 areas of your life causing the chronic stress).

What should I do about it? Your health is suffering and you must take a step back.

First, ask for help. You don’t have to do this on your own and no job or business is worth your health. Let me say that again for the people in the back – NO job or business is worth your health!

If you’re dealing with Chronic Stress, you need to ask yourself: who can I ask for help?

Then, ask yourself if you have boundaries around what is causing you stress. Where can you say no, make changes, and protect your energy?

Stage 4: Burnout

What does it feel like? Burnout is when you are no longer able to live your life or perform your normal daily responsibilities. You’re most likely experiencing a myriad of health issues, combined with a great deal of emotional fallout (anxiety, fear, depression). You may feel trapped or lost, and it can feel like the only thing left to do is to completely separate yourself or leave the job causing you to burn out.

What should I do about it? You really need to take a break and take time away from your job. But don’t just drink margaritas all day at the pool. I mean, you can have some margaritas! But the goal of the time away is to recharge, heal the physical and emotional wounds that you have endured, and then strategize either how you can reframe your relationship to whatever is causing you stress or how you can separate from it long term.

Additionally, taking responsibility for your role in it (whatever that might have been) will help you if you start going into victim mode.

Ask yourself: how can I own what’s happened? What was my role in this? This will hopefully prevent this from becoming a habitual thing.

Stage 5: Habitual Burnout

What does it feel like? This is when you’ve healed from burnout, but now at a new job or in a new role, you’re burning out again. This is a trauma response pattern that feels like as soon as things get stressful, you seem to go back down the same rabbit hole (even if it’s new people, new job, new situation – all of a sudden, it feels the same).

What should I do about it? You have to look at your role in the situation.
(1). Have achievement and success always been important to you?
(2). Have you always tried to differentiate yourself from others by your accomplishments?
(3). Is your identity largely defined by what you do, your business or your career?

If you answered yes to any of these, you’re more likely to suffer from Habitual Burnout because you will naturally put more pressure on yourself to continue driving and achieving (even if there are warning signs to slow down and even if you’ve burned out before).

I would invite you to start the (sometimes long) process of untangling your true self and your identity from your career/business/achievements. (1) Who am I without my career, business, or achievements? (2) Who or what brings me even greater joy, fulfillment, and peace?

By making more room for the things that bring you joy and allow you to just be (no performance or achievement needed), you’re able to loosen your grip on the very thing causing you so much stress and burnout and can begin to explore a new relationship with your career, and a new relationship with stress in general.
