Your IBT girls love to pamper themselves, especially at the nail salon. Nothing makes you feel more girly or put to together then having freshly manicured nails, am I right?! Today on the blog, we’re sharing our new favorite manicure inspiration styles for you to show your nail tech at your next appointment. These styles work with all nail shapes and types of polish. Gel, dip powder, acrylic or regular nail polish – there are endless options! Do a fun new shape or try a bold color this month. Who knows, you just might fall in love with something new!

Glazed Donut

We are in love with this neutral shade. Some nail techs call it ‘glazed donut’, some call it ‘chrome’. Whatever the case, it turns out stunning every time. You can do a a very light neutral color as your base, (light pink, off white/white), and then, they’ll work their magic by rubbing a super fine glitter over the top for a ‘glazed/chrome’ look. It’s a really cool process!

I once did a maroon shade under neath, with ‘silver chrome’ on top and it was gorgeous! The possibilities are endless with this one. Don’t be afraid to get creative!

French Tip

You can’t go wrong with the classic french tip, but what we love most is how versatile the look can be depending on the shape, color, or style you choose! Change up this classic style with a colored tip, OR do an ‘ombre french tip’ style with a dipping powder (only certain nail techs know how to do this).

More Inspiration For You

We hope you found some new and fun manicure inspiration for your next nail appointment! Will you go bold with a new shape or color, or will you stay classy and elegant with something simple? No matter what, we’re excited you found us and feel inspired by what we love. Don’t forget to follow us on social media for your daily inspiration!

If you’re anything like our editorial team, you’re currently living your best #WFH life. Our team has pretty much mastered the art of working from home like a pro, but it’s not without a few life hacks to help us stay on track and keep us moving along just as effectively as when we were working from our office. Whether you’re back in the office or you’re getting things done from a desk at home, these apps and tech tricks are what the IBT team swears by for productive work days!

Image via Pinterest

1. Asana

We’re hardcore Asana stans over here! From reminders to send follow up emails to tracking tasks for writing the articles we love to write (and you love to read!), our team loves using Asana’s task tracking system to stay on top of all the things!

2. Slack

Are you even working in the 21st century if you’re not living that Slack life?! We use Slack for easy access to communicate with each other to follow up on ideas, questions, projects, and, of course, to chat about the latest episode of The Bachelor that we all watched the previous night. Slack is super helpful for allowing us to check in with each other for quick questions without having to send an email, which could easily get buried in our inboxes!

3. Spotify

We love having Spotify on in the background while we work to have some music playing to keep us motivated! While our tastes range from lofi beats to Taylor Swift’s latest album, we all prefer having a little background noise rather than complete silence to keep the day from feeling like it’s dragging on.

4. Toggl

Toggl is a desktop app that allows you to start and stop a timer to track how long it takes you to work on a task, which can be super helpful to find out which tasks are taking longer than expected (or necessary!). Our team loves to use Toggl to help figure out where we could be even more efficient in our workdays, which is always a win!

Image via Pinterest

5. Mailtrack

If your job is anything like ours, it includes lots of time spent in what one of our editors affectionately calls “an inbox hole.” Mailtrack creates notifications to let you know if, and when, a recipient has opened your email, which can end up saving you so much time! If we can see that someone hasn’t yet read our email, we’re not stressing about sending a follow up email just yet to see if they’re interested in our idea.

6. Notion

If you need a glowing recommendation for Notion, one of our editors literally said “I could simply not exist without Notion” – it doesn’t get more convincing than that! It’s a task management system similar to Asana, but with tons of customization options to create a more unique experience to fit your own needs. Sign us up!!!

7. Focus Mode on our iPhones

One of the saving graces each and every one of our team members relies on is the Focus Mode setting on our iPhones. We love this feature during work hours to limit text notifications to only our team members so that we aren’t distracted by friends or family members popping into our phones throughout the day. A major benefit of working from home is the flexibility that comes with it, but we don’t want that to start dragging down our work quality by ending up on FaceTime with a friend for over an hour, which we’d never do if we were in an office.

*Pro tip: get outside for a little fresh air and exercise each day and take a midday walk around your neighborhood – this is the perfect time to check your phone and respond to any non-work related texts or calls that have come in so far that day!

8. Alarms on our iPhones

A few of our editors have found that they work most efficiently when they time block their days to do batch work, meaning they’ll set a timer to focus on one specific task at a time, rather than jumping back and forth between multiple projects. Using timers and alarms on our phones is the easiest way for us to stay on task and to let us know when it’s time to move on to the next item on our to-do list!

Already use some (or all!) of these apps? Drop a comment and let us know which one is your fave! Are there any that we missed? Tell us below so that we can be in the loop and we’ll all be our best working selves!

Being an intern is tough. Boundaries are murky and you are eager to learn everything you can while still being able to stand out. Our whole team has been there and understands what’s at stake for an intern. Not only do they want to perform the best that they can but they also want to ensure they still have some work life balance (that 8 hour work day is a transition!). So we asked our summer 2021 interns what advice they would give to, well… you! Here’s our intern guide to standing out and making an impact. Doesn’t matter if you are remote or in person all tips in this intern guide apply!

Intern Guide Tips NO. 1-3

Work as a team and not an individual!

At Inspired by This everyone is involved in some way and somehow. Working together and collaborating is what makes everyone so successful in this environment. Being a remote intern may be hard to fit into the team quick but having a team outlook on a project rather than an individual gave me more confidence and less anxiety when working on projects, knowing I can ask as many questions as to be successful.

Communicate, Communicate, Communicate.

While working remotely can be challenging for those who don’t like to speak up in the work environment this is a challenge. I hate bothering people with messages, even just silly questions. But I was pushed that there are no silly questions because everyone is constantly communicating with each other. Over-communication made me so much more successful and allowed me to learn more.

Attention to detail!

I have always been one to look at the overall picture of something and not the tiny little details. While sorting galleries and working on Pinterest revamps etc. We really have to take in the little details of every picture to see which one will stand out more or looks better, even if it is the slightest difference. I have learned there are so many little things to take into consideration to make a post or submission successful. Even though the overall look of something looks good a tiny out-of-place chair or shot of a newlywed couple out of place can change the overall vibe of the photo.

Intern Guide Tips NO. 4-6

Don’t be afraid to ask for more

If you have extra time and feel like you can take on more work, don’t be afraid to ask what else you can be helping with! Not only will the team appreciate it, but it gives you the opportunity to maximize your learning experience at your internship.

Ask the question, it’ll save you time

Being in a remote setting still makes it accessible to ask questions and stay in communication with your team. If you feel overwhelmed or lost, your team will never know if you don’t say something. If you don’t fully understand a task, it takes less time asking the question then trying to complete a task you don’t understand!

Take your lunch breaks

This might sound obvious, but sometimes I would find myself never taking a break from my computer all day. Though it might feel like you’re getting more done by not taking breaks, you’re most likely not maximizing productivity. Especially in a remote setting, give your eyes and brain the break they deserve— they’ll thank you later.

Intern Guide Tips NO. 7-9

Prioritize your tasks

It’s good to remember that every task you are assigned is important, but some should be given more time than others. I’ve learned to spend the first 20 minutes of my day coming up with a game plan of what tasks need the most of my attention and when I should do them throughout my day. When I complete those tasks, I reward myself with doing smaller tasks, like brainstorming Tik-Tok ideas, or engaging with comments. I have found that spreading my bigger tasks throughout the day keeps me motivated and energized to complete everything successfully.

Don’t be scared to share ideas!

Especially being in a remote environment, it may seem scary that your idea won’t be heard. It’s important to listen and note-take in meetings, and think of ideas that could be helpful for your team. A fresh angle or perspective might be just what someone needs to hear!

Bring your best work for each task

Although some tasks may be easier than others, you should always bring your best creative efforts to all your work, no matter the importance. After all, your work is a direct reflection of you! Take your time to pay attention to the details, ask questions if you are confused, and even if you make a mistake, tell your team and learn from it. Your team will appreciate your eagerness to learn!

No matter the age, color, or texture — it’s important to love the skin you’re in. Your skin goes through a lot, and it’s your duty to take care of it. There are plenty of beneficial ways to take care of your skin, like eating the right foods, exercising regularly, and nailing down the perfect skincare routine. The products you use in your skincare routine are pivotal to achieving that beautiful, glowing, and healthy skin we all want. That’s why using an all-inclusive and clean brand like ANOVÉ skincare can treat your skin the way it deserves to be treated. Read on to hear more about how ANOVÉ skincare came to be and how to be confident in the skin that you’re in!

MEET ANOVÉ FOUNDER
Evonna Kuehner

After graduating from Stanford University with a degree in STS (focused on Product Design) and a successful career in program management, Evonna Kuehner was determined to bring more diversity and inclusivity to the skin care market. Her academic and professional background, partnered with her years of research, led to the creation of ANOVÉ, a line of indulgent, plant-based products crafted for you to “live your best skin” regardless of your skin tone, type, or concern.

What sparked your interest in the beauty industry?

It was my personal passion for beauty and skincare that initially sparked my interest. My background is in product design and development, but not necessarily skincare. I was fascinated by learning the ins and outs of how to care for your skin, what causes certain skin\conditions, and how plant-based ingredients can completely transform your skin from the inside out.

What makes Anové different from other natural skincare products?

First and foremost, our brand seeks to provide consciously crafted luxury skincare for all skin types and tones. ANOVÉ believes in inclusivity with regard to whom products are created for, as well as who they are created by. We are a clean beauty brand and this is something we take very seriously in every part of our business operations. We pay a great amount of attention to each step of our development and packaging process. Outside of a clean formula, our bottles and jars go through a rigorous three-step cleaning process which ensures the highest quality
products make it to our customers to enjoy safely.

How do you stay inspired?

I am always inspired and motivated by my kids! Also, the customers who have become a part of the ANOVÉ family inspire me. In such a crowded market, there are many other options that customers can choose when shopping for skincare so I am truly grateful for those who choose us over and over again. My customers’ loyalty and support are what inspire me to bring my best every single day and make sure that the products we create and the business we conduct uphold our values of clean, inclusive beauty.

What is one thing you wish you knew when you started your business?

That entrepreneurship is a winding road. There is no definitive timeline on when you will reach certain milestones and sometimes things don’t go as planned, or work out the way you hoped they would. Building a business is all about planting seeds and being prepared for those seeds to bear fruit in their own timing.

What do you hope to inspire others?

I hope to inspire others to go for it, whatever “it” may be for them. Any opportunity or idea that excites you that you can’t stop thinking about is worth pursuing. Even if that means baby steps at first and just researching the viability of your idea or seeing what has already been done. It is very unlikely that you will regret pursuing something that you have a passion for or that brings you joy. On the flip side if you don’t go for it, those “what if” thoughts may haunt you.

What is your favorite product and why?

The Perfecting Oil will always have a special place in my heart. It was the first product I ever created way back in 2012 and it’s been one of our top-selling products since the very beginning. It’s such a sensory experience. Not only does my skin feel amazing when I’m applying it, but the scent is divine. I feel like an absolute goddess when I use it, which is how I want everyone to feel!

How can we best support you?

Customer feedback and referrals are always helpful! If you try our products we’d love to know what you thought and if there’s anything that could have gone better for you (customer service, packaging, shipping speed, etc). Also, if there’s a product or multiple products that you absolutely fell in love with, tell all your friends and family members so they can have an amazing experience also!

Burnout is a real problem in today’s workforce, and chances are you have experienced it or are currently in the middle of it. Our incredible business coach, Natalie Underdown, Ph.D. is an Executive Coach & Organizational Psychologist, and founder of The NU Co. Natalie has personally walked our team through the steps of burnout and coached us on how to banish it once and for all. Our team found so much value in her teachings and practices that we knew we needed to share the Stages of Burnout with all of you. That being said we will turn over the mic to the professional.

Burnout is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress. It occurs when you feel overwhelmed, emotionally drained, and are unable to meet constant demands. There are actually 5 distinct stages of burnout – once you know what they look like, you can work on identifying which stage you’re in, and how to handle it!

Stage 1: The Honeymoon

What does it feel like? Oh happy days! These are the early days where things feel good, you’re excited about the opportunity ahead, and sure, you can see that there will be some stressful times ahead (of course there will be), but for now you’re relaxed and focused on the opportunity ahead.

What should I do about it? Now is the time to set yourself up for success! This where a mindfulness and wellness practice will pay off in dividends! This is also where you’ll have the time and energy to invest in support mechanisms like coaching so that when stress does appear, you have everything you need in place to handle it. AKA: don’t wait until your car is broken down on the side of the road to get an oil change!

Stage 2: Some Stress

What does it feel like? You may feel an onset of physical and emotional symptoms popping up here and there, be a bit anxious from time to time, get a little short or irritable with your loved ones, and/or feel a bit more tired. You also may start putting the things that actually help you combat burnout (like wellness and investing in your relationships) on the back-burner.

What should I do about it? Understand what’s causing it and do something about it. Now is the time to address this head on before it gets worse. Is it:

(1). Your workload
(2). A perceived lack of control (has a lot been changing?)
(3). A misalignment in the amount of effort and the payoff
(4). A values mismatch
(5). Or the community/environment/people you’re around every day?

Stage 3: Chronic Stress

What does it feel like? This is when stress has become the norm. You start expecting things to go wrong, are always waiting for the other shoe to drop, and find yourself thinking or saying “why do I have to do everything, all the time?”

Health and relationship issues start surfacing (because you have not been prioritizing them) and it starts to feel like everything is going wrong (even if it’s really just 1 or 2 areas of your life causing the chronic stress).

What should I do about it? Your health is suffering and you must take a step back.

First, ask for help. You don’t have to do this on your own and no job or business is worth your health. Let me say that again for the people in the back – NO job or business is worth your health!

If you’re dealing with Chronic Stress, you need to ask yourself: who can I ask for help?

Then, ask yourself if you have boundaries around what is causing you stress. Where can you say no, make changes, and protect your energy?

Stage 4: Burnout

What does it feel like? Burnout is when you are no longer able to live your life or perform your normal daily responsibilities. You’re most likely experiencing a myriad of health issues, combined with a great deal of emotional fallout (anxiety, fear, depression). You may feel trapped or lost, and it can feel like the only thing left to do is to completely separate yourself or leave the job causing you to burn out.

What should I do about it? You really need to take a break and take time away from your job. But don’t just drink margaritas all day at the pool. I mean, you can have some margaritas! But the goal of the time away is to recharge, heal the physical and emotional wounds that you have endured, and then strategize either how you can reframe your relationship to whatever is causing you stress or how you can separate from it long term.

Additionally, taking responsibility for your role in it (whatever that might have been) will help you if you start going into victim mode.

Ask yourself: how can I own what’s happened? What was my role in this? This will hopefully prevent this from becoming a habitual thing.

Stage 5: Habitual Burnout

What does it feel like? This is when you’ve healed from burnout, but now at a new job or in a new role, you’re burning out again. This is a trauma response pattern that feels like as soon as things get stressful, you seem to go back down the same rabbit hole (even if it’s new people, new job, new situation – all of a sudden, it feels the same).

What should I do about it? You have to look at your role in the situation.
(1). Have achievement and success always been important to you?
(2). Have you always tried to differentiate yourself from others by your accomplishments?
(3). Is your identity largely defined by what you do, your business or your career?

If you answered yes to any of these, you’re more likely to suffer from Habitual Burnout because you will naturally put more pressure on yourself to continue driving and achieving (even if there are warning signs to slow down and even if you’ve burned out before).

I would invite you to start the (sometimes long) process of untangling your true self and your identity from your career/business/achievements. (1) Who am I without my career, business, or achievements? (2) Who or what brings me even greater joy, fulfillment, and peace?

By making more room for the things that bring you joy and allow you to just be (no performance or achievement needed), you’re able to loosen your grip on the very thing causing you so much stress and burnout and can begin to explore a new relationship with your career, and a new relationship with stress in general.

No. 01

We’re dying to know how the dream of Amber Sol Collective came to life! How did you get started and when was the “aha” moment when you knew this was an idea you had to move forward with?

Well to be honest, we had quite a few “aha” moments! We got started by working together, managing an artists’ company, working side by side in a studio every day. We were constantly amazed at how well we worked together while also gradually becoming best friends. Our first “aha” moment came in conversation while making art at our 9-5, where we realized our differences in artistic styles seriously complimented each other and just how much we thrived off of each other’s bad-ass-boss energy. Our second “aha” moment was truly a serendipitous sign when Victoria was offered a big job that she realized required a partner. We were thrown into collaborating for a project bigger than either of us had handled before and the outcome was a total dream. The natural levels of partnership, the final execution, and the creative flow that came from it were beyond our greatest expectations and we knew then and there that we had a business blooming.

No. 02

Where did the name Amber Sol Collective come from?

Being the flower children that we are, we wanted a name that matched our vibe and captured our essence; our upscale bohemian aesthetic, our funky flare, our colorful and sunny, warm energy. (“Amber” MAY have also been inspired by the colors of our long hippie hair…) Sol represented a double entendre for the California sun that we live for and the SOUL that we put into our craft. Amber Sol Collective embodies the warmth and passion that we aspire to bring to life in every project and speaks to our goals of highlighting and collaborating with other creatives.

No. 03

Starting a business in 2020 must have been… a lot! How did you pivot and what was the biggest lesson learned?

Oh man, where to start… we had only officially launched Amber Sol in January and had been on this crazy upward trajectory of networking and starting to make real business connections when Covid hit and the world abruptly shut down. As event stylists and interior designers who rely on human interaction and productions of varying sizes, as our industry crumbled, we absolutely experienced a grieving period with it. Not only was the state of the world in such a devastating and scary place, but we had no idea if and when we would be working again. It definitely took a month or two of processing and brainstorming to even get to a place where we felt able to sit down and start restructuring. The pivot happened once we were able to accept the reality of the situation, and with that came the lesson; rolling with the punches. As the news was ever-changing, there really wasn’t any stability to hang onto and plan around. So all we could do was accept that, and learn to adapt and do so quickly.

No. 04

Have you ever found yourself in a creative rut while being a new business owner? If so, how did you work through it?

2020 in itself felt like one long creative rut, and we were constantly battling with the lesson we mentioned above; how do you roll with the punches when nothing is normal and “real life” can’t exist for the time being? The answer is, self-care, patience, and communication with your business partner. It was not an easy year for us, as individuals and as a team, and we had to constantly remind ourselves that we were earning our stripes with every change and adaptation. We refused to let the spirit of events and celebrations go, as that is the heart and soul of our company, while also accepting that the industry would not be opening back up for a long time. We were determined to find ways to still bring beauty and joy to people, in Covid-safe ways. So we let ourselves feel all the feels, cry and talk it out incessantly, and (over time) we finally reached a place where not only did we start to feel inspired and excited about what we COULD do, but we realized so many doors we had not noticed before, were wide open. That’s when the creative juices really started flowing back in.

No. 05

What is your “I’ve made it when” moment?

We’ll know we’ve made it when: we start working with artists and publications that we’ve been looking up to, been inspired by, and have been dreaming of being featured in. Basically, when our heroes want to start working with us, we’ll know we’ve done some things right! But we’ve definitely had lots of glimpses and mini-moments already that have made us feel so proud and inspired for the future of Amber Sol.

Whenever we get the chance to talk to a female entrepreneur we will jump at the opportunity! Today is no different, and we are so excited to share with you all a behind the scenes look at glory skincare, and the amazing women behind the brand, Alisia Ford. Between this girl-boss and her empowering story we know there will be something for everyone to appreciate in this one, not to mention this skincare line is to die for, seriously we tried it!!

What inspired you to start Glory Skincare, and how has the company grown since then?

When I moved to Portland, I did what most people do when they move to a new town, they look for all the similar “essential” shops you had back in your hometown. After 3 years of traveling back and forth to LA to get my hair done, I decided to look for a place to get a facial treatment. I sought out for an esthetician of color that had experience treating melanin-rich skin like mine. After endlessly searching for places in the Portland area, I conducted similar searches in Seattle, Austin, Dallas, etc. and discovered that outside of Los Angeles and New York, there just wasn’t a space for women of color to get skincare needs met. I conducted some research creating a survey and sent it to 50 close friends and family and asked them to share it with their network. Within a week, I had over 300 responses and I used this data and additional research and determined that 70% of women of color don’t feel genuine representation in the skincare industry; have limited access to dermatologists, and lack guidance on what skincare products to use.

How has the lack of representation and diversity in the beauty industry inspired your company decisions?

Everything we do is with a melanin-forward approach. It is in our DNA as a brand. Women of color should be at the forefront of every touchpoint in skincare and beauty and it starts with us. . Everything we curate and create starts with HER in mind. We value clean beauty, culture, women empowerment, community, and self-care. All are important to me and the team, but most prized is community. I created Glory Cares, because that is how we’ll make a lasting impact in the community.

What products does your personal Glory Skincare subscription box contain?

The great thing about our subscription boxes is that each box is 100% catered to one’s skincare needs, and is based off of their results taken from our skincare quiz. Our quiz was curated by top skin experts to deliver data-driven results that that tailor to one’s skin type. Based on the results of the quiz, a selection of non-toxic beauty products are chosen to include in a SubscriptionBox

If there was one thing you could tell your younger self what would it be?

If you don’t see a space for yourself, create one. No idea is too big or small, and there is no time like the present to explore hidden passions or talents.

Where do you hope Glory Skincare will be in 10 years, and how can our readers help get you there?

I see Glory expanding to offer skin care services, possibly having retail stores. I also see us expanding to offer products and services to men and children. I already have the brand names for both categories– but I’d hate to reveal too much, too soon ;). As far as ongoing support, small businesses truly take every purchase, review, and feedback into consideration. We pride ourselves on building a community that is transparent and supportive, so anything from having a repeat customer, to a simple social mention on Instagram means a lot to us.

When we get to take a behind-the-scenes look at a business, we know it’s going to be a good day! Today is no exception. We had the pleasure to interview the incredibly talented Kate with Kate Lester Interiors, and learn a little bit more about her business, and what inspired her to start an interior design company!

Can you tell us a bit about what you think makes Kate Lester Interiors different from other designer firms?

I mean, I guess it’s me. Since I have a background in business and finance, it was really important to me that our business be structured, well, like a REAL business. We review financials, we have budgets, we talk openly about realistic costs and where the clients “see value.” Hiring an interior designer is not just about making your house pretty, it’s investing in your home, your future, and your family, so we take that very seriously and make sure that our clients know we are always being good stewards of their money. I think the other thing that sets us apart is that we have a pretty streamlined and tailored process. We don’t shop with our clients, we don’t do just one room, or a half-room, we work a certain way and we don’t deviate from that. It doesn’t work for everyone, but after years of doing it wrong, this process works for us and creates really beautiful results and clients that are truly pleased with their investment after the big reveal. I stay true to our model, our pricing structure, and our process, and it works.

What is your secret to being a successful business owner while staying creative?

You can’t just do one or the other. To be really honest, I am much more of a “natural” at being a businessperson. I have had to work much harder at honing my creativity and finding my “voice” when it comes to design. I don’t think it’s possible to be perfect at both, so recognize your weaknesses and surround yourself with people who help balance them. Being the smartest or most talented person in the room every day is boring. I also think allowing yourself time to design and create is really important. I try hard each day to make sure I am delegating tasks that don’t have to absolutely be done by me. This was hard for me at first, since I am stubborn and a perfectionist, but in the end, it strengthens your team, creates trust, and allows me more time to work “on” the business instead of “in” it.

Where do you draw inspiration from?

Everywhere! Recently I made my husband pause The Politician, so I could take a picture of a stair railing detail. I also get inspiration from old fashioned books! I think so much of Pinterest and social media is regenerated content- I am always trying to look for something that feels fresh and unique.

What has been your favorite project to date, and why?

Can I say ALL of them? To be really honest, each project that we finish is my favorite, until we start a new one. I think this is because every time we take on a new project we are pushing boundaries, thinking outside the box, and taking our clients outside of their comfort zone. This translates so differently each time, and after we complete a home everything comes together and I just sort of lose myself in the excitement and joy of seeing the finished product.

If you could give the world one blanket piece of design advice what would it be?

You do you. Frame your kids’ pencil drawing and hang it over your bed. Paint your powder room black. I think far too often people are so busy trying to turn their Mediterranean track house into a modern farmhouse (because that is what they are bombarded with online) they forget who THEY are. Make sure that your home reflects the people who live there- and if you love it, then own it… and everything else will fall into place.

Victoria Bell Design shares,

Make the space in your life that will allow you to pursue a career in design at your own pace. Make sure to do as much research as possible. Learn the logistics of what it means to start your own LLC and what it takes to create and start a business. Before you create any design, you need to know that you are running a business. And when starting a new business it’s important to shoot your shot. One thing I always say about myself is that I have no shame in trying new things and speaking to new people. I call, email, and message anyone who can help me, whether they are at the top of their field or not. I feel it’s important to learn from everyone around you–to learn what to do, and more importantly, what not to do. Another thing is to truly internalize that you will make all kinds of mistakes. I have made so many mistakes and I am sure I will continue to make them. I have learned from them and will continue to do so. Through trial and error, I am learning what works best for me and how I can best serve top-quality results for my clients.

Sara Barney of Bandd Design shares,

If you’re tired of sitting at a desk the entire workday and are looking for a more hands-on, creative, and fast-paced work environment, then interior design might be your calling! It’s a hot industry to be in right now because of the pandemic and people are realizing the shortcomings of their current living situation – there’s a lot of shuffling going on with people moving and rearranging their homes. There’s more freedom in terms of working remotely and on your own terms (e-design, etc).

Lisa of Lisa Gilmore Design shares,

Interior design is a career that thrives off of passion, so if you are craving a career that allows your passion to be fed, then I would highly recommend it! Don’t get me wrong, every day isn’t passion-filled and happy moments – there is a lot of problem-solving and technical needs, and customer service is a huge factor in having a successful interior design career

Additionally, interior design (and the building industry) is one of the few careers that has remained successful, positive, and growing during this unexpected time of the global pandemic. We are seeing people in their homes more, and they are finally paying attention to them, not being so distracted by the hustle before, craving to make them better and more their style.

If you are considering a career change to interior design, I would certainly look into some schooling so you can get your feet wet with the different techniques used, understanding textiles, proper use and function, and a baseline of codes in the building industry. Working on improvements on your own home (or a friend’s home) and documenting the processes well, will also speak volumes for your talent and competence to complete a project, and that will help you become more established down the road!

So you landed the internship of your dreams, first of all, congratulations! Take a moment to pop some bubbly, and soak in your accomplishment. Once you have properly celebrated it’s time to start preparing for your first day, and that’s where we come in. Today on the blog we are sharing the dos and don’ts to stand out in your internship that we have collected from the past 13 years of business. That being said, the work doesn’t stop after you read our tips be sure to actually follow through with them. We recommend printing (or writing) these tips to stand out in your internship down in a notebook so you can refer back to them time and time again.

DO fully commit to the position.

The company and team have invested time and energy into hiring you and training you for an internship position. Your commitment to the job will make you stand out and allow them to trust you with even more responsibilities.

DO ask questions.

This is especially important in a remote internship position! Ask your supervisor(s) questions so you can make sure you’ve completely understood the task at hand and will always deliver great results.

DO share your ideas.

As an intern, you may feel nervous about speaking up during meetings or brainstorms. However, your fresh eyes and new ideas may be just what they need!

DO be enthusiastic.

A positive attitude will always unlock more doors for you. Everyone wants to be around someone with an infectious enthusiasm!

DON’T wait around.

If you finish your tasks early, ask your supervisor(s) if there’s anything else you can help with! This will allow you to see more aspects of the job, and let the team know that you’re eager to learn and help.

DON’T be unorganized.

If you happen to get an internship where the managers don’t use a task managing system, then don’t be afraid to set one up yourself. You do whatever you need to do to make sure you are delivering on all of your assignments. Our team’s favorite task manager is Asana, we love how easy it is to navigate!

DON’T be afraid to admit mistakes.

If you mess up, just be honest! We all make mistakes, and being upfront about any issues will allow your supervisors to solve problems quickly and help guide you in the future.

DON’T peace out.

Once your internship is over, try to stay in touch with your past coworkers and supervisors! You never know when they may have a job opening in the future or when you may need a reference!
