Whenever we get the chance to talk to a female entrepreneur we will jump at the opportunity! Today is no different, and we are so excited to share with you all a behind the scenes look at glory skincare, and the amazing women behind the brand, Alisia Ford. Between this girl-boss and her empowering story we know there will be something for everyone to appreciate in this one, not to mention this skincare line is to die for, seriously we tried it!!

What inspired you to start Glory Skincare, and how has the company grown since then?

When I moved to Portland, I did what most people do when they move to a new town, they look for all the similar “essential” shops you had back in your hometown. After 3 years of traveling back and forth to LA to get my hair done, I decided to look for a place to get a facial treatment. I sought out for an esthetician of color that had experience treating melanin-rich skin like mine. After endlessly searching for places in the Portland area, I conducted similar searches in Seattle, Austin, Dallas, etc. and discovered that outside of Los Angeles and New York, there just wasn’t a space for women of color to get skincare needs met. I conducted some research creating a survey and sent it to 50 close friends and family and asked them to share it with their network. Within a week, I had over 300 responses and I used this data and additional research and determined that 70% of women of color don’t feel genuine representation in the skincare industry; have limited access to dermatologists, and lack guidance on what skincare products to use.

How has the lack of representation and diversity in the beauty industry inspired your company decisions?

Everything we do is with a melanin-forward approach. It is in our DNA as a brand. Women of color should be at the forefront of every touchpoint in skincare and beauty and it starts with us. . Everything we curate and create starts with HER in mind. We value clean beauty, culture, women empowerment, community, and self-care. All are important to me and the team, but most prized is community. I created Glory Cares, because that is how we’ll make a lasting impact in the community.

What products does your personal Glory Skincare subscription box contain?

The great thing about our subscription boxes is that each box is 100% catered to one’s skincare needs, and is based off of their results taken from our skincare quiz. Our quiz was curated by top skin experts to deliver data-driven results that that tailor to one’s skin type. Based on the results of the quiz, a selection of non-toxic beauty products are chosen to include in a SubscriptionBox

If there was one thing you could tell your younger self what would it be?

If you don’t see a space for yourself, create one. No idea is too big or small, and there is no time like the present to explore hidden passions or talents.

Where do you hope Glory Skincare will be in 10 years, and how can our readers help get you there?

I see Glory expanding to offer skin care services, possibly having retail stores. I also see us expanding to offer products and services to men and children. I already have the brand names for both categories– but I’d hate to reveal too much, too soon ;). As far as ongoing support, small businesses truly take every purchase, review, and feedback into consideration. We pride ourselves on building a community that is transparent and supportive, so anything from having a repeat customer, to a simple social mention on Instagram means a lot to us.

When we get to take a behind-the-scenes look at a business, we know it’s going to be a good day! Today is no exception. We had the pleasure to interview the incredibly talented Kate with Kate Lester Interiors, and learn a little bit more about her business, and what inspired her to start an interior design company!

Can you tell us a bit about what you think makes Kate Lester Interiors different from other designer firms?

I mean, I guess it’s me. Since I have a background in business and finance, it was really important to me that our business be structured, well, like a REAL business. We review financials, we have budgets, we talk openly about realistic costs and where the clients “see value.” Hiring an interior designer is not just about making your house pretty, it’s investing in your home, your future, and your family, so we take that very seriously and make sure that our clients know we are always being good stewards of their money. I think the other thing that sets us apart is that we have a pretty streamlined and tailored process. We don’t shop with our clients, we don’t do just one room, or a half-room, we work a certain way and we don’t deviate from that. It doesn’t work for everyone, but after years of doing it wrong, this process works for us and creates really beautiful results and clients that are truly pleased with their investment after the big reveal. I stay true to our model, our pricing structure, and our process, and it works.

What is your secret to being a successful business owner while staying creative?

You can’t just do one or the other. To be really honest, I am much more of a “natural” at being a businessperson. I have had to work much harder at honing my creativity and finding my “voice” when it comes to design. I don’t think it’s possible to be perfect at both, so recognize your weaknesses and surround yourself with people who help balance them. Being the smartest or most talented person in the room every day is boring. I also think allowing yourself time to design and create is really important. I try hard each day to make sure I am delegating tasks that don’t have to absolutely be done by me. This was hard for me at first, since I am stubborn and a perfectionist, but in the end, it strengthens your team, creates trust, and allows me more time to work “on” the business instead of “in” it.

Where do you draw inspiration from?

Everywhere! Recently I made my husband pause The Politician, so I could take a picture of a stair railing detail. I also get inspiration from old fashioned books! I think so much of Pinterest and social media is regenerated content- I am always trying to look for something that feels fresh and unique.

What has been your favorite project to date, and why?

Can I say ALL of them? To be really honest, each project that we finish is my favorite, until we start a new one. I think this is because every time we take on a new project we are pushing boundaries, thinking outside the box, and taking our clients outside of their comfort zone. This translates so differently each time, and after we complete a home everything comes together and I just sort of lose myself in the excitement and joy of seeing the finished product.

If you could give the world one blanket piece of design advice what would it be?

You do you. Frame your kids’ pencil drawing and hang it over your bed. Paint your powder room black. I think far too often people are so busy trying to turn their Mediterranean track house into a modern farmhouse (because that is what they are bombarded with online) they forget who THEY are. Make sure that your home reflects the people who live there- and if you love it, then own it… and everything else will fall into place.

There’s a reason one-room-challenges and #currenthomeviews are so popular – we’re all a little obsessed with interiors. Well, at least all of us here at IBT HQ are! So we’re thrilled to chat with the wildly talented interior designer, Erica Bryen, of Erica Bryen Design, and tour one of her client’s gorgeous homes on our lifestyle blog today. The Newport Beach designer doubles as a wife and mom to her 5 year old son, Jagger – needless to say, she has a lot on her plate. But she still manages to create the most stunning homes! Here is one of her latest that we know you’re going to love…

Modern Home, Erica Bryen Design

Tell us a little bit about you! Where did you start your career?

I have always loved design since I was a little girl. Growing up in Newport Beach, California, both of my parents were in the home/design space. One of my first jobs was working with my dad on his model home developments. I also spent time working with my mom at her design showroom. This helped me realize very early on my passion for design – and ultimately lead me to pursue a career as an interior designer.

When did you decide to launch your own business? What ultimately encouraged you to take that leap?

I knew from the start that I wanted to have my own business. I like to be in control as a designer, and I know if I went to work for a typical company – I would get bored quickly! I do not sit still and like to work at my own pace – as my ideas of what I want and like are always ever-changing.

I was very lucky that when I went out officially on my own as Erica Bryen Design in 2008, I had two projects that started at the same time. The first project was in Palm Desert, and the other was located in Newport Beach. Both projects were stylistically very traditional – think dark furniture and blue and white Chinoiserie. Lucky for me, both of these clients became long term friends, and I will always be grateful they trusted me to design their gorgeous homes!

What does your day-to-day look like?

As a business owner and interior designer, every  day is very different – which is part of the reason I love my job. We will be in the office working on a design, creating presentations, working on CAD, and space planning –  or we can be out at site visits, meeting with clients or visiting some of our favorite showrooms pulling fabrics, tile, etc for our clients.

How would you describe your design aesthetic?

I would say that my designs usually always involve lots of color, textures and tend to be bold. I don’t like to play it safe or stay inside a certain trend – I like to take risks, and I find that is always pays off.

Modern Home, Erica Bryen Design Modern Home, Erica Bryen Design

Ok, let’s talk about your incredible work! What was the inspiration for this home’s design?

Thank you! This home in Newport Beach was originally quite traditional, but the owners wanted something funkier, out-of-the-box, and didn’t want it to look like everyone else’s home. We have worked with the client on a few different projects in the past, so they trusted us to take the home from traditional to a more modern-eclectic vibe, and it turned out really well.

Our inspiration for this project was the client’s incredible art collection, which really anchors the home.

Tell us a little bit about the interior design process with new clients, where do you start? What’s the best part?

With new clients, I usually have them show me what they love, don’t like, and get a feel for how they live in the home – do they have kids, pets, like to be outdoors a lot, big entertainers – getting to know them and what’s important kicks off the design process. My favorite part has to be the big reveal at the end of the project. I love when the client gets to see the final design for the first time. Seeing their smiles and happiness for their newly designed space makes it all worthwhile.

Modern Home, Erica Bryen Design Modern Home, Erica Bryen DesignModern Home, Erica Bryen Design

Do you have a favorite room in the house and why?

My favorite room in the Bayshores’ house is definitely the Master Bedroom. The clients have four children and I wanted to create a hotel-like atmosphere where they could relax and unwind at the end of the day. The light woods and silk wallpaper with contemporary lighting from Arteriors really helped bring the ‘resort-vibe’ to life.

Modern Home, Erica Bryen Design Modern Home, Erica Bryen Design

What are your favorite interior trends happening now?

I’ve always loved black and use it in a lot of projects – whether it’s a dark accent wall, cabinets, or side table – I’m happy to see it’s trending right now. I like to pair black with brass and natural woods.

Do you have a favorite coffee table book?

Hard to pick one, but I am always going through my Kelly Wearstler coffee table books, Doris Duke’s Shangri La, A House in Paradise, and Kitchen by Mick De Giulio.

We have interviewed quite a few business women on our business blog, from innovators and philanthropists, to working moms and all around girl bosses. And it’s safe to say we’ve learned a thing or two. These female entrepreneurs have paved the way for those of us who have a product we dream of seeing out in the market, those of us who have ever thought we need to choose a career or a family, those of us who desire to see the world change, and every woman in-between. They are successful women in business, yes, but also moms and creatives and much much more.

Here are just a few of the business women we have had the privilege of chatting with over the years and some of the meaningful things we have walked away with. If you find yourself particularly inspired by one – or all – of them, be sure to click through to their complete interview and walk through their journey with us.

Caitlin Crosby of The Giving Keys

business women, caitlin crosby

“Anyone can make change. It’s not that difficult. Get passionate about something you know can be better in this world… And then start with throwing a party with your friends bringing awareness to it & donate proceeds of the party to someone you can help. Let yourself dream up other creative ways to improve the issue you’re passionate about. YOU can do it.” – Caitlin Crosby

Julie Solomon, Host of The Influencer Podcast, and Pitch it Perfect Founder

Julie Solomon on The Influencer Podcast

“Not only do you have to love what you’re doing when it comes to the content you’re creating, but you really have to understand that it’s a marathon and not sprint and if you want to be here a year from now, five years from now, or 10 years from now, you’re going to have to stick with it, test a lot of things out, have a lot of trial and error, and be able to step up to the challenges when they come.” – Julie Solomon

Elle Rowley of Solly Baby

“I think this is something all moms should hear more often: be kind to yourself. Being a parent is impossibly hard, but you’re doing a better job than you think you are. The next time you’re tempted to guilt yourself about something instead tell yourself that you are enough.” – Elle Rowley

Katie Dean of Katie Dean Jewelry

Neutral and Feminine Office Tour

“The harsh truth is that you may not succeed but it’s better to try and learn from it than never try. I can assure you that even if it doesn’t go how you imagined, you will learn SO much and that experience will help you in anything you go on to do. And the flip side of that is you may be wildly successful!” – Katie Dean

Manuela Testolini of In A Perfect World Foundation

Manuela Testolini, business women

“It’s important to remember that anyone can make a difference. I would encourage anyone reading this to think about what drives you, what are your passions that call you to do more? Take a look at what organizations are out there giving back that excite you. There are so many ways to give back, whether by lending your time and talents, donating to a cause that inspires you, or simply spreading the word. Every act of service makes a difference.” – Manuela Testolini

Jacqui Saldana of Baby Boy Bakery

business women, baby boy bakery

“If you say yes to something that doesn’t make you happy it won’t be your best work. It seems so simple, but a lot of times we say yes just because. Just because we need experience, just because it’s a big partner or promotion or just because we need the money. But if it doesn’t make you happy at the start it isn’t worth it. Life is too short for un-happy.” – Jacqui Saldana

Jessica Camerata & Cathy Anderson of The Blog Societies

“Set short and long term goals, both individually and as a team. Be open about your objectives and how you reach them, and be sure to support each other’s individual goals.” – Jessica Camerata & Cathy Anderson

Joy Cho of Oh Joy!

business women, oh joy

“I draw inspiration everywhere I go, but mostly I focus on what draws me in — whether that’s an eye-catching storefront, a delicious meal, or a new place I visit. I am constantly trying to expose myself to new experiences so there is a constant flow of ideas or projects that will inspire others as well.” – Joy Cho

Lauren McGoodwin of Career Contessa

business women

“There are so many good ideas and so many directions you can take your business, but if you lose focus, you can wind up going too many directions and not getting very far with any.” – Lauren McGoodwin

Designer Kelli Murray

“The tough part about owning your own business, especially a creative one, is that the wheels never stop turning and there is always always something more to do. I’ve had to really discipline myself with my time and create boundaries. I have to be intentional about the time I spend with my husband, my kids and my friends…otherwise my workaholic tendencies can easily take over.” – Kelli Murray

Jessica Honegger of Noonday Collection

noonday collection, business women

“Abandon the belief that another woman’s success diminishes yours. So often, we feel the need to put other women down to guarantee our own success, but it doesn’t work that way. Every woman that succeeds is paving a way for other women to succeed. Not only do we each need to run the race we are called to run, but we also need to cheer other women on as they run theirs.” – Jessica Honegger

The Ladies of BOXFOX

business women, boxfox

“We really consider ourselves a family business, and we’ve welcomed spectacular talent from outside our networks into BOXFOX with open arms. Our fox family is all about togetherness, whether we’re singing in the warehouse packing orders, swapping soups on Mondays, or sharing insights in our business book club. We work really hard, but we always try to make room to explore everyone’s interests and have fun.” – Jenni Olivero

Who should we interview next?!

We’re so excited to tour the bright kid-friendly home office of Jen Biswas on IBT today! Through her blog, Paisley + Sparrow, Jen shares life and style inspiration from her point of view; with two babies & a hubby at home in Minneapolis – and this is where all the magic happens! We understand the value in having a space that inspires you to create, but when you work from home, it also needs to fit with your lifestyle. Jen did just that, and describes her pretty space as “the perfect spot for creative work time as well as playing with my kids. :)”

When and why did you start blogging? How has your content evolved since?

I started blogging 7 or 8 years ago with my sister – we shared products that both of us liked since we had opposite tastes in just about everything. I evolved it into an ecommerce site full of products that were making a difference in the world in 2013. I added the blog back into the business in 2016 and moved it back into a full-time blog in April of 2018. It has been a constant evolution of growing and changing depending on what’s happening in my life!

Be it your home, content, or style where do you look for inspiration?

I’m constantly looking for inspiration! I love finding home and fashion inspiration when I’m out to eat at restaurants. I love seeing how they decorate everything – especially the restrooms! I feel like if a restaurant pays extra special attention to making sure the restrooms are styled, then you’re in the right place. Restrooms are a clear indicator of the overall culture of a restaurant. They are easily forgotten spaces but attention to this means they haven‘t left a detail behind. It also says a lot about the cleanliness in other spaces-like the kitchen! ☺ I also love seeing what other diners or servers are wearing and am always taking mental pictures.

I’m also always checking out Pinterest and magazines for style inspiration as well as content ideas. I love magazines like Better Homes and Gardens, Real Simple, Vogue and our local magazines!

How would you describe your decor aesthetic?

I recently spoke to someone who described it as “California Boho” which resonated with me so I’m claiming it! My style has always been very eclectic with a mix of high end pieces, vintage finds, DIY projects and of course, tons of plants! I love having plants for their look and pop of greenery, but also because they’ve been proven to help you be more productive, less stressed and more focused. My rule of thumb is to strive to have 3 plants per room!

As a creative, an inspiring space is a must! What were some of your goals in mind when designing the space?

Our office is the first thing people see as they enter our home, so I knew I wanted it to be welcoming, bright, and unique. I wanted enough open space for taking photos and shooting video (my office is the best spot in our house for natural light) but I also wanted a large desk for working. Since my office faces the front of our home, our kids are naturally in there a lot (especially in the winter) to see what’s going on outside! Because of this, it needed to be kid friendly too.

I really wanted a statement desk (I’d say my pink desk fit that bill!) and a giant gallery wall full of art work. It was super important to me to love everything in my office since I spend a lot of time in it working and being creative.

I love gallery walls and curating all of the pieces. This one has work from a ton of local MN creatives (I love supporting local artists!), vintage items (including my Grandma’s high school portrait), one of my grandma’s paintings, and of course some family photos! One thing that is super important to gallery walls is having things of different textures. I did this by including a wood piece by one of my former mentors who is now an amazing wood artist, Anna Bailey, and a weave by a friend I’ve know since high school who runs the shop, JunahWoods. The gallery wall went through about 6 different variations because it didn’t feel right to me and I didn’t love it. I tweaked and moved things until I finally got it to where it is now and now I’m love everything about my office!

Reed DiffuserPlants, MirrorWeavingsGazelle Pots

Did you decorate it yourself? Were there any DIY projects you undertook to make it come together?

For the most part, yes, I decorated it myself! My husband helped a bit, but since this is my space in our house he let me run the show. He’s the best. 😉 Besides planting quite a few plants, I only did a couple DIY projects including painting the white plant stand and the small pink table.

Do you have favorite places to shop for home decor?

My favorite place would have to be Anthropologie! I also love West Elm and Wayfair.

What does a typical work day look like for you? Do you have a normal routine?

Every day I’m up by 5:30am to do a quick workout and knock out a couple hours of work before my kids are up. We have a part time nanny, so on the days that she comes, I typically walk a block to our local coffee shop and am literally head down working for 5-6 hours straight with no break. Having dedicated time to think and write without little people around me is so important!

On days she’s not here, I’m going to the zoo or library or just playing at home with the kids until their afternoon naps. I try to get 1-2 more hours of work in during naptime (which doesn’t always happen ha!). My husband is super supportive and doesn’t mind when I work after we put the kids down, especially when I’m working on big projects.

Tell us a little bit about your beautiful family!

I’ve been married to my husband, Rishi for a little over 3 years! He’s a hunky Indian guy from California (maybe that’s where the Cali vibe in our home comes from!) who handles MN winters far better than I do. We have 2 kids who are 16 months apart. Roy just turned 2 and Penelope is 9 months! We also have a 3 year old rescue dog name Chloe.

What are some of your best tips for staying focused when working from home- especially with kids!

1. Have a dedicated work space. I know having an office is not practical for everyone, but find a place in your home where you can work whether it’s a desk tucked into a corner, a table in a spare bedroom or something that you can claim as your workspace. Prior to our home, I lived in a small condo. I converted one of my closets into a “cloffice” so I had one place in my condo to work.

2. Find time to work and take care of yourself when the kids aren’t around. I love my sleep, but working before the kids are up in the morning or after they’re asleep at night is guaranteed work time. That doesn’t mean they’ll never wake up early but I can typically knock off a few things on my to do list. I also prioritize working out, walking my dog and reading during this time as well. Obviously I don’t get them all done each morning but taking care of myself and my body gives me more energy in the day. On days I’m feeling overwhelmed I’ll take our dog for a long morning walk and pray before working. That helps me to feel ready for the day since I’m taking time for myself.

3. Have a to do list! If you’re a mama like me, you’re running in 500 different directions making 800 decisions in a matter of a few minutes. Once you finally get some alone time to work, often times your brain is going in so many directions that it can be hard to focus. Having a to do list helps me get going quickly and start knocking things off the list. I always have 2 lists going – 1 is what has to get done that week and the other is a laundry list of things I want done, blog post ideas or videos to shoot. I shared a ton more tips on this post on my blog.

Let’s start at the beginning – what inspired you to become an artist? Was this always a dream of yours?

Well, I wanted to be a mermaid as a child, but when that didn’t work out I decided I wanted to be an artist. I used to color on all the walls in my house as a kid, and so my mom designated a “coloring wall” in my room. I then went on to sell drawings on the playground for a quarter to my classmates. I took an AP art class in high school and was hooked. That love of creating carried over to a theater major in college. I worked for different theaters and also did some set and costume design. I love all things creative, but lately I feel like painting is where I am the most in my element.

Where do you start with a new project? Tell us a little bit about the creative process behind your paintings.

I used to think that artists always felt inspired and ready to paint. There are some days when painting feels like the easiest thing in the world, but there are also plenty of days when I feel uninspired and picking up a brush feels challenging. On those days, I grab my phone to take pics and go walk around my city. I love it. Memphis is one of the most inspiring places in the world to me. We have these amazing old buildings that are being revitalized, and our downtown overlooks the mighty Mississippi River. Being around the people, the architecture, and the energy of this place almost always makes me want to paint. I also really love color, and I think part of that comes from teaching elementary art. Kids make really bold, uninhibited, joyful color choices and brush strokes when they are painting. It’s like they don’t know yet to stay in the lines and be perfect. I love that!

Do you have a favorite piece?

My favorite piece is usually what I am currently painting. I am working on a big beach commission, and it is my favorite at the moment!

Tell us about your beautiful family!

We are crazy! I love my family. Having little kids has made family life chaotic and messy and beautiful all at the same time. I was wiping down nail polish “art” off the walls yesterday, and we will spend 20 minutes in the morning sometimes just looking for a matching pair of kids’ shoes. My husband and I have been married for 9 years and kind of grew up together. We have these two little beautiful rascals that we adore, and we live in a little ranch house that we are constantly rearranging. My husband is in ministry and I teach kindergarten through 5th grade art and sell paintings. Our faith gets us through tough times, and I feel like that is the anchor that holds us together. My family has stolen my heart…..and wallet….and most of my brain cells. All worth it.

Do your daughters love art too? What is your favorite activity to do with them?

My daughters love to make a mess! They are in this super tactile phase where they want to get their hands on whatever I am doing. If I am painting in my studio, they want to be painting in my studio. If I am cooking, they want their hands in the bowl. (I’m not exactly a culinary goddess, but we bake a lot of cookies at our house.) It’s pretty cool to see them mimic what I am doing. I think as far as activities go, my favorite thing is to just be outside with them. My studio is in our garage, and we will open up the doors to front yard and they will play or create something while I paint in the fresh air. We are all the happiest when we are outside. Or eating chocolate. It’s a toss up.

How do you balance being a mom to 2 little girls, teaching art, and running your own business?

That is a really good question! Honestly, I haven’t done a great job of that this year. I went back to work full time right as my painting business started to pick up, and it has been a huge learning curve. I drank a lot of coffee and stayed up late too many nights and watched way too many episodes of Project Runway. I would go to work during the day and then paint late at night after the girls had gone to bed. Next year, I’m going back to part time teaching and will have set studio hours when I can paint while the kids are at school. It’s hard to admit that you can’t do everything well all the time. I have learned that time is my currency, and I need to do a better job managing that in the future. Saying no is so challenging for me, and working less can feel defeating, but I think it is the best thing for my family during this season.

How do you rest and recharge?

I GO TO TARGET BY MYSELF AND IT IS THE BEST THING EVER!!! I usually wind up there when I have free time, and I go and get a Venti Mocha from Starbucks and try not to spend too much money in the dollar section. I also go to church on Sunday mornings, and it renews my soul for the week.

What can we expect next from you!

I am wrapping up a beach series and then am going to either start a Montana series (my dad lives there) or give abstracts a try. I am torn between the two!

You are in for a treat today! We’re chatting with entrepreneurs Sarah Landry and Katie Rocheford, who not only run their own photography and floral design businesses, respectively, but also recently opened the cutest shop, Salt & Grove! The shop doubles as a creative studio to inspire women to find their inner passion through hosted events as well. Cool, huh? Oh! And they are moms! Yep, they do it all (and do so, so well, we might add!). We’re excited to take you on a tour of Salt & Grove’s Newburyport, MA storefront while these ladies impart some of their wisdom…

You both owned businesses of your own before starting Salt & Grove – how did you meet?

Yes, we did and we still do!  Sarah is the owner of Sarah Jayne Photography and Katie is the owner of Sweet Annie Floral Design. We first met about five years ago while working together on a New Year’s Eve editorial. At the time, we were both still working our “day jobs” while running our side businesses. We became fast friends and confidants as we each made the big leap of turning our creative side gigs into the real full-time deal.  We have seen each other through many milestones of our individual businesses, and now we are excited to work together as business partners on our new passion project!

What inspired you to open up the shop? Was this always a dream of yours?

The idea of moving into a creative studio/workspace was something we casually started talking about around two years ago. Since we were both running our businesses from our homes, we dreamt about a place where we could work, meet with clients, and spread our love for creative living. When we saw our now space, we fell in love with the potential. Not only would we be able to work there, but we envisioned creative workshops, a shared meeting space for other creatives, and a small shop!

Opening the shop was never the sole mission of Salt & Grove, but it quickly became something we are proud of and excited about. We later discovered over wine one night while waiting for a flight that we both had always had a secret desire to open a brick & mortar shop (along many other mutual dreams-stay tuned!).

You describe the shop as a creative studio as well – tell us about all the fun that goes on there!

So many things! Our back space serves as Sarah’s natural light studio, where she does a lot of family and small lifestyle sessions as well as Katie’s floral design space for weddings and events. When one of us is not using the space for our individual businesses, we are using to foster creativity within our community. We have a series of events we call the “Feel Good Event Series,” and the intention is just that. Life is busy and hard, so we want to help by giving people a place where they can have a creative outlet. All of our events are centered around the idea of letting go of the daily grind a bit and just do something fun that lights you up. Some of our events have included a women’s empowerment talk, yoga, macramé and holiday hosting tips. We are constantly dreaming up new ideas for the creative studio, which is really fun.

We love that you carry products from local artisans! How did you discover them? Do you have any favorite pieces or best-sellers?

Thank you! When we first thought to have a “shop,” we based on the idea of supporting local artisans…people who were working really hard to run their own creative businesses. We decided to first carry some local favorites, including Elizabeth Benotti ceramics, Porcelain and Stone jewelry, and Aria Botanical candles. All of these makers are local and making beautiful products. We were curious what the response would be, since there were no other shops in our area doing this, and it turns out, people love it!

Our product lines have expanded so much, and we love each of the makers we carry. We choose items that are most importantly, made in the US and that work with our brand, which has a strong coastal vibe. Our name Salt & Grove represents the East coast (where Katie grew up, close to the ocean) and the West coast (where Sarah grew up on a citrus and avocado grove). We get so excited when someone comes into the shop and they say it reminds them of a place they once visited on the West coast.

To this day, some of our best sellers are from those first three makers we carried.

How do you balance your own businesses and Salt & Grove all while having kids at home as well?!

We’re not really sure, haha! Like any working mom will tell you, it’s often a struggle. We both deal with the emotions that go hand in hand with being a working mom. It’s a constant balancing act that often leaves us feeling a bit overwhelmed and sometimes with the guilt of coming up short on something. If we put more of a focus on one area, we can sometimes experience the feeling of not doing/being enough in the other areas.

Motherhood is and always has been our #1 roles.  We can relate on that level, which is a large part of the reason we work together well. Our families always come first, and we have a mutual understanding that there will be times when one of us will inevitably be more tied up with family obligations. We honestly see ourselves as so incredibly lucky that we get to work doing what we love while spending a great amount of time with our kids.

As with any career, there are challenges, and since we are the owners and driving forces of our own work, our biggest hurdle is often managing our time, deciding where to put our efforts and definitely giving ourselves a break, since we are our own bosses (critics). Luckily, we have each other to lean on, listen to, understand, and remind the other that we are in fact doing a kick-ass job at juggling it all.

Do you have any tips for sharing the workload when working with a business partner?

Communication is so key. Going into business with someone is a strong relationship, and like any other relationship, it requires work. We agreed a long time ago that we would be open and honest with each other, and we have done a great job at that. We each have our strengths and weaknesses and it’s really important to keep the line of communication so open. We congratulate each other on the things we each do really well…we think that helps feel like we are both running this together. We each have our roles and the things we do well…the other knows that and appreciates it. Having defined roles really helps as well.

Also, go into business with someone who inspires you and who makes you a better you. We are both constantly coming up with new ideas and how to push the envelope. We give each other reasons to think creatively and that is pretty much the essence of our whole mission.

How do you rest and recharge?

We both love spending time adventuring with our families and spending time with friends! Sarah is married with an one-year-old boy, Luke, and Katie is married with a 6-year-old daughter, Quinn, and a 4-year-old son, Miller. Traveling and experiencing new places with them is something we both mutually enjoy when time allows for that. On a day-to day basis though, it’s all about finding some time to exercise, enjoy some coffee from our favorite local cafes, and perhaps a glass of wine helps too ;).

What’s your best advice for entrepreneurs looking to start something of their own?

Go for it! That sounds so simple and trivial, but honestly, just take a step, even a tiny little step. That step will lead to the next and the next after that. Once you’ve established something, it will blow your mind that you created something that once was never there. And no matter how many other people are doing it, no one is doing it like you’re doing it. Next to motherhood, it’s the most powerful feeling out there.

Entrepreneurship is not for the faint of heart…it’s tough and it can be easy to feel defeated at times, but the reward is really worth it. Also, find a buddy, someone who is going through it alongside you. It helps so much to have someone to bounce things off of, vent to (most people can do that with their co-workers, which you most likely won’t have), and most importantly, encourage you. Plus, once you’re celebrating your success, they’ll drink the champagne with you 😉

Who doesn’t love jewelry? From statement earrings to stackable rings Margaret Elizabeth is quickly becoming one of our favorite stops to shop pretty adornments. And to think, founder and designer Meg Shackleton started the company out of her dorm room in college and now runs it with two baby boys! We virtually sat down with Meg to learn her story and what works for her when running a successful business and household. You may already love Margaret Elizabeth pieces but after reading this you’ll love the lady behind them too!

Tell us a little bit about Margaret Elizabeth and where your idea for a jewelry brand began!

Margaret Elizabeth is a jewelry brand for women, run by women – meant to make you feel beautiful. I started the brand in college very much as a little passion project, hosting my first trunk show in my dorm room. One day I was shopping at a boutique in Boston when the owner asked me where I got my necklace. I told her I had made it and she asked if I would be interested in selling them in her store. That’s how the idea that my little passion project could be a business came to be!

Being in college, what were some of your early challenges launching a business while in school?

The biggest challenge I faced when starting the business was how segmented and complicated all of the online tools were. The back end of my website was super confusing and I really needed to know how to code to make any changes. Now, there are all these great tools like Shopify (and iPhones!) that make it so much simpler to create good looking content and get it online with ease.

Have you worked on Margeret Elizabeth full time ever since?

I loved working on Margaret Elizabeth in college and really enjoyed it as a little side hustle, but when I graduated I wasn’t ready to pursue it full time. So, I decided to take a job at Google and learn a little bit about the corporate world and online advertising. I kept working on Margaret Elizabeth on my nights and weekends and a few years into working in both roles, a big box retailer expressed interest in carrying my line. At that point I decided to leave Google and pursue Margaret Elizabeth full time. It’s been almost 6 years since then and I haven’t looked back since!

What came next – was there a moment where you felt like you made it?

I definitely don’t feel like I’ve made it! But, it’s really rewarding to see women I don’t know wearing my jewelry and enjoying it.

We absolutely love all of your pieces! Do you have a few current favorites?

Thank you! My favorites right now are our Laurel Tassels. I wore them so much this summer and love that the cobalt blue tassel transitions into fall/winter, too!

In addition to shopping online, you also have 3 brick + mortar stores! Where can we shop Margaret Elizabeth? Do you plan to open more locations?

You can shop Margaret Elizabeth online, at our flagship store in San Francisco, 2230 Chestnut Street (in the Marina neighborhood) and in Palo Alto at Town & Country. We’re also carried in about 100 boutiques around the world and in a few select Bloomingdales & Anthropologie stores. Right now we don’t have any plans for brick and mortar expansion. We’re happy with where we are and want to build on what we’ve got!

What does your typical work day look like?

My work day starts with no alarm clock needed: my cherubic little rascals wake up nice and early ;). We all have breakfast and play at home and then I take my 3 year old, Tate, to school. Then, I head over to our office that is around the corner from his school. From there, each day is a little bit different. Some days I’m in the office working on designing the collection or working with our marketing director on an upcoming campaign – other days are spent meeting with our store managers and working on merchandising our shops. I work best in the mornings so I try to get all of my emails and “must do” tasks done then. I leave the office around 4:30 or 5 and head home to my boys.

As a mom of two young boys, how do you navigate the elusive work/life balance?

Ahhh, the pursuit of work/life balance! Someone please tell me how it’s done! Here’s what works for me: I told myself when my oldest son, Tate, was born that I wanted to continue working hard on my brand but that I also wanted to be with my kids as much as I could be. For me, this has meant committing to three days in the office with my team and two days at home with my boys.

I still work on my days at home, but I try to be really regimented with my time and schedule calls or catch up on work during naps or at night after the boys go to bed. I think I’m more efficient with my time now that I’m a mom, but the struggle to get it all done is so very real. In all honesty, I’m tired a lot! But I love my slightly complicated hybrid work/home schedule and I’m committed to trying to make the juggling act work!

Meg Shackleton of Margaret Elizabeth

As a company of women, how do you create an office culture that supports everyone both professionally and as working moms?

The biggest way we support each other is through flexibility. Flexibility and the ability to conduct meetings over the cacophonous “untz, untz, untz,” of a breast pump ;).  Everyone on our team really “gets it” and most days start by connecting with one another on how we’re doing. It’s amazing to me how moms can just cut straight to the chase. So often a quick “how are you” morphs into a conversation about sleep schedules, when to introduce solid foods, or how to deal with a tantrum-ing toddler. Ultimately, I think our company culture supports the whole person- the career woman and the mama. And I try really hard to create a space that makes both sides of that equation feel represented and supported.

What is your favorite part of your job?

The People. I love my team, I love our customers, and I just love coming in every day to see people that I like so very much.

Meg Shackleton of Margaret Elizabeth Meg Shackleton of Margaret Elizabeth

What is one tip you would give to other working moms to help make life at home or work easier, or just to encourage them?

The hardest thing for me as a working mom is feeling like I’m constantly letting someone down. When I’m at the office, I miss my babies and when I’m home I feel like I’m letting down my team at work. The thing that I’ve found to be most helpful is to set realistic expectations for myself and to be content with those boundaries. For example, I’m home with my boys on Fridays and that’s the one day that I don’t tend to any work. I try not to check my inbox and I even try to limit checking social media because it tends to be a rabbit hole! Once I told myself that it was ok not to fit in a little work that day of the week I was more content with just hanging with my boys and focusing on them.

Ultimately, my best advice is to live by the mantra, “I’m doing the best I can.” Because at the end of the day, we’re all just doing our best, right?

For any new or many times over moms out there, you know the excitement (and necessity) behind a new innovative product for moms/babies. Mompreneur Sam Rudolph identified the struggle of finding the right -or any great breast pump. So, she created Babyation, the smart breast pump whose technology lives up to it’s millennial customers. She created the pump, along with her husband, Jared, specifically to help working moms return to work while still being able to conveniently breastfeed and pump.

We’re excited to chat with the inventor/working mom, Sam, and get a glimpse into her family life with Jared and their baby boy, Exton.

When and Why did you start Babyation?

Jared (my husband and business partner) and I were on vacation when I read an article in The New York Times discussing how outdated breast pump technology was. Although I wasn’t even pregnant yet, I saw my future flash before my eyes. I knew I always wanted to a) be a mom, b) breastfeed, and c) work, but I knew nothing about breast pumps. I was, quite frankly, horrified to read about them. When I finished the piece, I woke up Jared to vent, and in his half-asleep state, he said “I can build one.” I found out later he just wanted to end the conversation so we could go to brunch!

We love that you created this together! How is it working with your spouse?

We love it! It works very well for us, but it certainly wouldn’t be ideal for everyone. We met working together in college, and we’ve collaborated in our professional lives over the years, so it’s second nature at this point. We’ve always specialized on different sides of the same industry. Jared is always the technical guru, and I’m always focused on the business/content. We used to work in media, and now we work in parent tech, but our areas of expertise haven’t changed.

The trick is to stay in our own lanes, which is especially easy for me, because I am very clearly not an engineer! We also have this strong foundation of trust, which means we don’t have to dance around feedback or worry about politics. Our goals are incredibly aligned, and we know that when we disagree, we do so truly believing in the other person’s abilities and intentions. There’s no ulterior motive, other than wanting to bring the best product possible to market.

How do you create the elusive work-life balance while being a mom & running your own business?

I’m pretty sure no outside observer would say that I have balance! In fact, I think balance is impossible, because that implies that things need to be equal. The reality is that in any given day, it’s never going to be equal. Personally – and I say this only for me and my experience – I derive satisfaction when I’m a present parent and an engaged founder. Those are the priorities I have established for myself. And that means that other things don’t always happen. My house is often (read: constantly) messy. I do not practice as much self-care as I’d like. But those are trade-offs I’m more than willing to make in order to be a good mother (the way I define it, not by others’ standards!) and a successful businesswoman.

What’s one of your mom must haves (besides Babyation of course!)

I think the most important item a mom can have is a strong support group who is there for her without judgment. It can be a spouse, friends, family…but we all need someone who we can go to when things get difficult.

What’s the best business advice you’ve ever received?

The customer is always right!

This mom took the age-old question, “What’s for dinner?” and made the answer simpler for families everywhere with an app that features easy & quick recipes at your fingertips. Ali Hedin created Weeknight Society out of both passion and necessity. And we’re forever grateful! While you wait for it to download on your device, read on for how and why she developed our newest life saver.

First things first, tell us more about Weeknight Society and the purpose of it!

Weeknight Society is a custom app aimed to help busy families prepare delicious, manageable and healthy weeknight dinners. Every Saturday, weekly menus are uploaded to the app, complete with an aggregate grocery list that allows you to check off items as you shop. Each recipe calls for seasonal ingredients found at a local farmer’s market or grocer and the recipes take 35 minutes or less from prep to plate!

We always find ourselves saying ‘Why didn’t we think of that!’ How did you come up with such a necessary idea?

You have no idea how many times I heard other moms struggle over what to cook for dinner. It wasn’t until we were at my son’s baseball game that ended at 7:30pm (at which point our kids were starving and it was almost time for them to go to bed) that it dawned on me that I could create an easy, weeknight cooking solution. I have always loved cooking and the challenge of coming up with dinner that cooks quickly is fun for me. I started sending recipes out to my girlfriends with ingredient lists and soon it had grown into something bigger – moving all my recipes to an app just made sense.

Creating an app sounds a bit daunting! What does the process look like?

It’s actually more daunting than I knew when I started down this path!  I got lucky when I found out my friend’s mother was a developer and a cook! Her ability to write code and develop the app made the complicated tech side of things seem easy. The rest of the app process involved things I knew how to do – cook, photograph, & style the food.  Every week my photographer and I get together and shoot step-by-step shots of each recipe I’ve developed.  When it’s not a shoot day, my family is part of the testing process.

Every dinner we eat is an experiment to see if it will work for the app – Will it cook fast enough? Is it delicious? Will everyone eat some part of it? Every single recipe on the app was developed in my kitchen for my family. The most daunting part of the app now is making sure that every recipe I write is one that I love and am proud of.

You’re obviously an avid cook! What are some of your go-to weekly recipes?

We eat exactly what you see on the app! My children love when things are on a skewer, so we eat quite a few of the kabob recipes.

How do you get your kids interested in cooking with you? Do you have any kid-proof dinners you swear by?

My kids love cooking with me. They love being in the kitchen and being involved. I think it’s important to not “downgrade” our palettes by serving our children “kid-friendly meals” like chicken nuggets. I’ve found if I can have them help in the kitchen and get them excited about real, healthy meals, they will usually eat what they have made. These Bangkok Noodles are one of my children’s favorites. They love the fresh fruit, vegetables, and the seasoned noodles.  Because this recipe cooks in almost no time at all, it fits into their attention span.

Bangkok Noodles

Ingredients, Serves 4

1 lb soba noodles
1 bell pepper, sliced
1 red onion, sliced
1 carrot, sliced
1 mango, sliced
4-6 cloves of garlic, smashed
1⁄4 cup oyster sauce
1⁄4 cup soy sauce
2 tbs honey
1 lime, juiced
1 tsp sriracha
1⁄2 cup fresh basil, chopped
1⁄4 cup peanuts, chopped

Directions

1. Bring a pot of water to a boil and cook noodles.
2. Heat a large skillet and brown garlic.
3. Add oyster sauce, soy sauce, lime juice, sriracha, and honey. Whisk and cook until bubbly.
4. Stir in onions to coat with the sauce. Remove from the heat.
5. Toss in cooked noodles and cover with sauce.
6. Add bell peppers, onion, carrots, fresh basil, and peanuts. Toss and serve hot or cold.

Where do you go from here? What are your hopes for Weeknight Society?

Yikes! Good question. There are a million things I want to do with Weeknight Society. I’d love to also open a deli-style restaurant in Seattle, where customers can purchase fully-prepared dinners, local ingredients, or fresh vegetables. I can’t wait to see where it takes me.

Favorite weekend activity: Wandering the farmers market or working in my garden.  We try to spend most of our weekends at our beach house that’s in a wonderful small town. Usually we end up at baseball or soccer games instead.

I always go the the Farmer’s Market for: The latest thing in season.  In the spring, I live for strawberries and rhubarb and by mid-summer I’m drooling over corn. In Seattle, we have very distinct seasons and the produce follows suit.

I can’t live without: Yoga pants, rain boots, and a sturdy Dutch oven.
